Constitution and Bylaws

Below are the official Constitution and Bylaws for the Missouri State University Pre-Medical Society.


Constitution

Article I. Name

The name of this organization will be the Pre-Medical Society.

Article II. Purpose

The Pre-Medical Society will seek to fulfill two goals:

  • Establish a means of communication among students, the medical profession, and the Pre-Medical Committee
  • Expose students to information concerning the medical profession

Article III. Membership

Membership will be open to all Missouri State University students who meet the necessary criteria:

  • Maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0/4.0. Provisional sponsorship may be temporarily given to students having a lower GPA.
  • Uphold good academic standing with the University. If a student is on probation, his or her academic advisor must recommend sponsorship.
  • Submit an application and dues as determined by the officers of the current administration
  • Exhibit acceptable progress in the established pre-medical curriculum

Article IV. Officers

Section 1. Offices. The offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Service Chair, Social Chair, and Education Chair will be held.

Section 2. Length of Term. The officers will hold office for a minimum of one (1) year. Their term will take effect June 1 of the year they are elected and will terminate May 31 the following year.

Section 3. Limitations. Officer nominees must meet certain qualifications:

  • The President and Vice-President will be juniors and/or seniors when they assume office but may be sophomores for election purposes.
  • All other officers may be sophomores when they assume office but may be freshmen for election purposes.
  • Any candidate for office must have been an active, contributing member of the organization for at least one (1) semester before assuming office.

Article V. Meetings

Section 1. General. Meetings will be held at least one (1) time during the month in the regular school year at a previously determined day and time.

Section 2. Special. Additional meetings may be called for the benefit of the membership:

  • Conferences and seminars with informative keynote speakers will be provided as scheduled. These meetings will be open to the public.
  • A spring banquet honoring outstanding students will be held as the last meeting of the academic year. This banquet will be restricted to members of the Pre-Medical Society and his or her guest.

Article VI. Amendments

Amendments to the constitution will be carried by a two-third (2/3) majority vote. One half (1/2) of all members must vote for the ratification to be considered valid. Notice of amendment voting must be given to all members one (1) week before such action. This constitution must be reviewed every five years to ensure all information is applicable.

Article VII. Ratification

This constitution will supersede and render inoperative any other Pre-Medical Society Constitution previously in effect.

THIS CONSTITUTION WAS READ, APPROVED, AND ADOPTED BY THE MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY PRE-MEDICAL SOCIETY IN THE FALL 2006.


Bylaws

Article I. Membership

Article II. Officers

Section 1. Determination of Officers. The offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Service Chair, Social Chair, and Education Chair will be elected in April of the spring semester. Nominations will be taken at least one (1) week prior to the election which will be either paper or email ballot. For an election to be valid, one half (1/2) of the membership must cast a ballot. New officers will begin serving on June 1 of the year they are elected and will cease to hold office on May 31 of the following year.

Section 2. Duties of Officers. The officers of the organization will have specific duties:

(A) President. The President will determine the content of and preside over all meetings. He or she will nominate committees as necessary, and in association with the other officers and faculty advisor, obtain speakers. The President will maintain communication with members. If for any reason the President resigns, the Vice-President will assume the position of President and a new Vice-President will be appointed by the new President. If any other officer resigns, the acting President will appoint a new officer for the position whose term will take effect immediately upon the approval of the remaining officers.

(B) Vice-President. The Vice-President will oversee the maintenance of the organization’s Web site and assist the President as necessary. In the absence of the President or in the event of his or her inability or refusal to act, the Vice-President will perform all duties of the President.

(C) Secretary. The Secretary will keep a record of the minutes of each meeting and manage all promotional materials.

(D) Treasurer. The Treasurer will be responsible for all funds and fundraising projects.

(E) Service Chair. The Service Chair will schedule all volunteering opportunities excluding those opportunities for which the president appoints a committee. At least one event must be provided each month.

(F) Social Chair. The Social Chair will coordinate all social events excluding those events for which the president appoints a committee.

(G) Education Chair. The Education Chair will organize Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) preparation, study groups, and other learning resources as pertinent and available.

(H) Marketing Chair: The Marketing Chair will advertise the Society to current and future students and maintain the MSU website.

(I) Historian: The Historian will take pictures at events hosted or attended by the Society and work with the Marketing Chair to maintain the MSU website.

Section 3. Limitations. Officer nominees must meet certain qualifications:

Section 4. Termination. An officer may be removed from office for failure to meet the responsibilities set forth by the Pre-Medical Society or for charges brought against that officer. All charges must be submitted in writing at a regular monthly meeting. Officers will be expelled from their office by a three-fourth (3/4) vote of the total membership to be held at the next monthly meeting.

Article III. Meetings

Committees will be appointed by the President as necessary. Each committee will consist of three (3) to four (4) members with one member representing the group as chairperson. All members are eligible to be committee members.

These bylaws may only be amended when notice of the proposed amendment has been given to all members at least one (1) week prior to voting. At least one half (1/2) of the total membership must be present at which time a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the voting members will carry the amendment. These bylaws must be reviewed every five years to ensure all information is applicable.

Article VI. Ratification

These bylaws will supersede and render inoperative any other Pre-Medical Society Bylaws previously in effect.
