Missouri State University

Student Community Action Team

The Missouri State University Student Community Action Team (SCAT) is a registered student organization dedicated to serving the Springfield community. SCAT was established in 1994 as a complement to the Federal Work-Study program. SCAT is a unique program that allows students to serve an average of 10-12 hours a week with an area not-for-profit agency for the fall and spring semesters of the academic year as their work study assignment.  Through their participation, SCAT members broaden their educational experience and awareness of community needs along with providing valuable services, insights, and energy to the Springfield community. In addition to serving a not-for-profit agency, the students also participate in at least one service project in community each semester.

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Missouri State Student Community Action Team is to promote civic responsibilities among students through community service that addresses priorities of the local community in the areas of education, the environment, public safety, the economy, or human needs.

Why Join SCAT?

"It has opened my eyes to the true needs and problems that occur daily, yet go unhelped & overlooked. Working at my agency increases interpersonal skills and your overall morale; you take the focus off of your problems, which in turn is stress relief. It's gratifying."

"This agency has really helped me grow as a person. I have learned not to take things for granted. Working with SCAT is a great opportunity that everyone should take advantage of."

"I believe the program is great because you have more than just a job. You're contributing and being a part of something bigger. This experience has opened my eyes to the help that is needed out there; and this agency has given me the opportunity to be a part of that."
