HALL COUNCIL

What is it?

Hall Council is a student governing body in each residence hall.  Hall Council provides educational opportunities through programs, social and entertainment activities, and promotes communication between RHA, University administration, and the Department of Residence Life and Services.  Blair-Shannon Hall Council is the voice for our building; they decide how to use funds, bring forward student ideas such as where to place vending machines, and decide when to turn on the heat or air conditioning.  Hall Council’s purpose is to be the students’ voice.

 Who can join?

Any Blair-Shannon resident may join Hall Council.

How do I find out more about Hall Council?

Informational meetings will be held on Monday, August 21 at 9pm in the Grand Lounge, Tuesday, August 22 at 9pm in the Grand Lounge, and on Wednesday, August 23 at 9pm in the Grand Lounge.  If you are unable to attend one of these meetings and are interested in Hall Council, contact Chris Peterson, Hall Council Advisor, at 6-5196.

 What is the executive board?

Executive board leads the Hall Council.  Positions on Executive board include: President, Administrative Aide, Residence Hall Association (RHA) Liaison, Intramural Chair, Publicity Chair, Recognition Chair, Community Service Chair, Social Programming Chair, Academic Programming Chair, Internet Technologies Chair, Historian, and Homecoming Chair. There are also positions available on the Hall Council General Assembly which meets bi-weekly. These positions include Floor Presidents and At-Large Members.  Executive board members are selected through an interview process.  Individuals interested must fill out an application which can be obtained at the front desk.

Details on Decorating your room:

·         Be sure that your adhesive does not remove the paint from the walls.  You will be held responsible and charged if they need to be re-painted when you move out.

·         We suggest using 3M products to attach items to the walls.

·         No nails or screws may be used to affix items to the wall.

·         You are not to purchase paint to “re-paint” your room under any circumstances.  If your walls are not as you would like them to be, please talk to your RA.

·         Lofts are not allowed in University rooms.  Cinder blocks or any other form of bed lift are also not allowed.

·         No University-owned furniture or equipment should leave your room.  You are responsible for the condition of these items when you check-out.  You will be fully charged for any “missing” items.

·         There is no storage available for you; therefore all items must be stored in your room or taken home.

Facilities within Blair-Shannon

The Front Desk is located on the first floor, next to the student mailboxes.  With your student ID, you can check out games and cooking utensils to be used in the kitchen.  This is also the place where you can get your packages that are too big to fit in your mailbox.  Cleaning supplies, sports equipment, tools, pool and ping pong equipment, and many other items are available for you to check out with your student ID.  You also pick up your print outs from the computer lab at the desk.

There is also a desk located at the Shannon doors that is open from 7pm to 1am.  This desk is operated at night as a convenience to the residents, to ensure their safety, and allow them to use the Shannon doors after 7pm.

The desk staff consists of a full time receptionist that works Monday thru Friday 7am to 4pm.  Ronda is there to assist you in any way possible.  The night host, Grant, works Sunday thru Thursday from 11pm to 7am.   Any time that a full time staff member is not working, student workers are at the desk.   If you are interested in being a student worker at the desk, please pick up an application at the front desk and return it as soon as possible.

Laundry Rooms are located on each floor.  Laundry is pre-paid and is only open to residents of Blair-Shannon.

The Fitness Room is located across from the dining center. Weight pins and the channel changer for the TV can be checked out from the front desk.
