CONSTITUTION

 

ARTICLE  I.  Name and Purpose

 

The name of this organization shall be the Missouri State University (Missouri State) Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).  It shall be affiliated with the national AAUP.  Its purpose shall be to support the work of the national organization in the promotion of the interests of higher education and to advance the standards, ideals, and welfare of the profession.

 

 

ARTICLE II.  Membership

 

A.     There shall be six classes of members following the National AAUP

categories:

1)      Full-time: Teacher, researcher, or similar academic appointment at an accredited college or university.

2)      Entrant: For nontenured faculty new to AAUP. Eligibility extends for four years of membership.

3)       Associate: Persons with primarily administrative responsibilities.

4)      Part-time: Faculty receiving no more than 50 percent of the salary of a full-time faculty member.

5)      Joint: Couples with one member in the full-time category may enroll a second member at a reduced rate.

6)      Graduate: Persons enrolled as graduate students may join in this category for up to five years

 

B.     A member may be expelled for cause by a two-thirds vote of the membership

after an opportunity for a hearing.

 

C.     Membership in the local chapter requires membership in the National AAUP.

 

 

ARTICLE III.  Officers

 

                        The officers of the Missouri State Chapter of the AAUP shall be president, vice

            President, and secretary/treasurer.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BYLAWS

 

 

ARTICLE I.  Rights of Members

 

All members shall have the right to present motions and resolutions, engage in relevant debate, elect officers, vote on all issues, and serve on committees.  Full time members shall have the right to serve as officers.

 

 

ARTICLE II.  Officers

 

A.     The officers of the Chapter shall consist of a President, Vice-President, and a

Secretary/Treasurer.  These officers shall perform the duties prescribed by these bylaws and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the Chapter.

           

B.     The President shall preside at all meetings.  The President shall appoint all    

      Standing or Special Committees, membership on said committees, and serve

      as an ex-officio member of the same.  The President, or his/her designee,

      shall act as official representative for the Chapter at all functions which

      require said representation.

 

C.     The Vice-President shall preside, assume, and discharge all the duties of the

President in the absence of the President.

 

D.     The Secretary/Treasurer shall keep correct minutes of all meetings, maintain

accurate membership lists, keep accurate records of all financial transactions,

and expend funds as authorized by the Chapter.  In the absence of the Secretary, the Vice-President is charged with fulfilling the duties of the Secretary.

 

 

ARTICLE III.  Executive Committee

 

A.     The Executive Committee shall consist of the officers of the Chapter, four       

      members-at-large, and the Past President (ex-officio).

 

B.     The duties of the Executive Committee shall be to assist the President in

achieving the goals of the Chapter, to call special meetings of the Chapter

whenever deemed advisable, to act to fill any vacancies that arise, and other

duties as requested by the President.

 

 

 

ARTICLE IV.  Elections

 

            Elections shall be governed by the following rules:

                       

1)      Elections of officers and members-at-large shall take place not later 

than the April meeting prior to the beginning of the term of office.

 

2)      The officers and members-at-large shall be elected to serve for a term

of one year, from July 1 to June 30, or until their successors are elected.  Nominations are to be made from the floor.

 

3)      No member may hold more than one office at the same time.

 

 

ARTICLE V.  Meetings

 

A.  The Chapter shall meet as required to conduct business.  Special meetings

                  may be called by the President or a majority of the Executive Committee with

                  due notice given.

 

B.     Resolutions and motions made at Chapter meetings require a majority of 

members present to be adopted.

 

C.     Except as may be provided in this Constitution and Bylaws, or rules pursuant

to it, the latest edition of Robert’s Rules of Order shall govern the meetings of the Chapter.

 

 

 

ARTICLE VI.  Amendments

           

The Constitution and Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the membership present at any meeting, provided written due notice of proposed amendments has been given to all members.

 

 

ARTICLE VII.  Dues

 

A.     National dues are set annually by the National AAUP.

 

B.  Chapter dues are set annually by a two-thirds vote of the members present at

      the first meeting in the fall.

 

 

 

 

ARTICLE VIII.  Committees

 

A.     Appointed Committees

 

1)      Legal Assistance Committee

a.  The purpose of the LAC is to recommend to the Executive

     Committee, when appropriate, assistance of up to one hour legal

     consultation with an attorney of the Committee’s choice to a

     faculty member with an alleged grievance.

 

b.      Membership shall consist of three AAUP faculty members appointed by the President (after consultation with the Executive Committee).

 

2)      Membership Committee

a.  The purpose of the MC is to recruit and retain new members.

 

b.  Membership shall consist of the Secretary/Treasurer as chair and

     two AAUP faculty members appointed for one year by the

                  President (after consultation with the Executive Committee).

 

B.     Ad Hoc Committees

 

The President may form ad Hoc Committees, after consultation with the Executive Committee, from time to time tocarry out a specific c
